Take a self-storage site with 100 containers. Every tenant has their own key, but you need access to all of them. Our master keyed padlocks are built precisely for that. One master key opens every lock on the site, yet each padlock has its own individual key too.
Each padlock opens with its own key as normal, but you would also have a master key to open all of the padlocks. Your team carries one master key while tenants, staff or contractors each retain sole access to their own. Schools, gyms, facilities managers and site operators all use it for exactly this reason.
We offer master-keyed padlocks on three key profiles. Standard is the everyday choice , restricted limits key blanks and is much more popular for businesses and self storage operators making duplication without authorisation difficult. Patented goes further still; no copy can be made without your written permission, giving you complete key control from day one.
Our Squire WS75 Container Padlock is our most popular choice: CEN 4 graded, insurance-rated and backed by a 10-year Squire guarantee, available in restricted and patented variants. For higher security demands, our Mul-T-Lock range tops out at CEN 6. The full master keyed lineup includes the NE14H, NE14L, NE12H, NE12L, NE10H, NE10L, NE12SB, NG8 and NG10.
If everyone needs the same access with one identical key, keyed-alike is the answer. If individuals need their own key but you need an override, a master keyed is the right fit. Frequently Asked Questions
What is a master-keyed padlock?
A master-keyed padlock opens with its own individual key but also accepts a separate master key that opens every lock in the same system; two levels of access are built into one lock.
Are master-keyed padlocks suitable for self-storage companies?
Master-keyed padlocks are ideal for self-storage. Each container has its own tenant key for private access, while the operator holds a single master key for the entire site, available on standard, restricted and patented key options.
Are master-keyed padlocks available on restricted or patented keys?
Restricted and patented options are stocked at Locks Direct. Restricted keys limit duplication without authorisation. Patented keys go further, meaning no copy can be made without your written permission, giving you complete control.
Can I add more padlocks to my master-key system later?
In most cases, expanding your system is straightforward. Contact us before ordering, and we will match any new locks to your existing master-key profile. Call 0800 542 1264 for advice.
Is there a guide to master-key systems?
Our Keying Services Hub and master-keyed container padlocks guide covers how these systems work and which option suits your setup in plain English.
